Past Activities: November ‘23

In the last two months, quite a few activities were organized under the various committees of H.V. Ockham, including ACCIE, SympCie, AcquisiCie and DriCie.  We hope we can keep this high activity going.

Activities Marathon:

Under ACCIE, we organized a very nice Activities Marathon. For a whole weekend long, we had several nice events which were attended by quite a lot of different people. We made exquisite cookie decorations, we walked with a dog around campus, we played just dance, and as a cherry on top of the cake, the 15th board performed a play that can be described as the greatest play of all time, showing the glorious adventures and struggles in the love life of Dantea.

Lunch Lecture fractals:

For the more mathematically and artfully inclined, under SympCie, we organized a Lunch Lecture on fractals. The lecturer, Jose Iglesias Martinez, gave several interesting examples of fractals. I can recall the Koch snowflake, the Mandelbrot set and the Buddhabrot set were shown and explained. Fractals are roughly about an object with infinite detail (patterns on every zoom level).  There are several ways to mathematically construct such an object, but they all essentially boil down to repeatedly applying the same rule. It baffles me that by repeating a very simple recipe, you can get such a fascinating and complex structure (such as seen in the link).

Dinner Lecture Thales:

Additionally, under AcquisiCie, we also attended a lecture by Thales during the evening where the CTO Lukas Roffel talked about innovation. Specifically, about the forces that drive innovation and the role of large companies in innovation. He argued that good innovations have at least a decade of lead time and that bringing those innovations together takes a lot of time, money and sheer work. This is something large companies like Thales can play an essential role in. It was a very interesting talk, and we ended the evening with a good slice of pizza (you could call it a dinner lecture).

Drinks galore:

As usual, this all was accompanied with lots and lots of drinks under DriCie. Besides the post-plenary drinks and the good old SMOTMD drinks, the most noteworthy drink was the brilliantly named KaraOcke drink. Nearly everyone got to sing into the mike at one point. The quality of the music was debatable, but everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. As a result, we might want to organize another karaoke drink next year under DriCie.
