Week of Inspiration Recap

As an (Honours) student, you have the opportunity to reach beyond your horizon and comfort-zone. You do this by gaining knowledge and skills within your own study programme, but also by actively thinking about the world around you. You can get more than a degree.

Last academic year, from 8-12 May, H.V. Ockham and the Studium Generale successfully collaborated on the organization of the “Week of Inspiration 2023”. During the 61st anniversary of the UT, eight talks were given on some of the ongoing developments in the world with a focus on sustainability. The week was finished by Franz Timmermans, former Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, talking about the idea and implementation behind the green deal.

The week included talks about science. Prof. dr. Ignas Snellen lectured about the evolving methods used to find exoplanets in the search of extraterrestrial life and what this search might teach about our current notion of life. However, our trust in science may become less straightforward in the future. Rosanne Hertzberger gave several examples about the possible risks involved in using science as an absolute authority and about the remaining human element that persists in these disciplines.

Talks mentioning global conflict were also included. Climate general Tom Middendorp talked about the difference between the symptoms and the root causes of conflicts. He stipulated that climate disruption is a main driver of tensions and of an increase in global security risks. This realization has turned climate change (climate disruption) into a more direct and tangible issue. It helps people ‘feel’ the severity of the challenge ahead. However, Middendorp is convinced that the solution does exist and is arming you to play a meaningful part of it.

This is where technology comes in (because of course it does, it is the UT). During the week, Ir. Ap Verheggen presented his device that turns desert air into liquid water via condensation. Ap’s design is increasingly getting integrated into future desert project and may become a main pillar of future developments. It is a great example of what a single determined mind can achieve. Additionally, Solar designer Marjan van Aubel talked about her seamless integration of solar panels into buildings and her endeavor to use solar power as an artform.

Overall, all the talkers gave possibilities for the role that you will play in life. They mention some of the current challenges and developments happening in the world and the role you can play in it. They hope to present an outline of what is possible on your personal journey. However, In the end, you are the one that colors in that journey. Get inspired!

We hope to see you during the Week of Inspiration 2024.
